The Minister of Climate and Energy, Kaspars Melnis, will discuss issues of energy security, sustainable development, and energy independence during his working visit to Rezekne and the Balvi region today, the Ministry of Climate and Energy (MCE) reported to LETA.
The visit will begin in Rezekne, where the minister will visit the oil storage facility that was struck by one of the foreign drones that entered Latvia's airspace from Russia on the night of Thursday, May 7. As a result of the incident, four empty oil tanks were damaged.
During the visit, the minister will familiarize himself with the situation at the site and meet with representatives of the enterprise and the services involved in the incident.
Melnis noted that the security of energy infrastructure is one of the most important issues in Latvia and the region. To ensure Latvia's energy security, it is important to assess the situation promptly while simultaneously strengthening cooperation between government institutions, municipalities, and enterprises, the minister emphasized.
After visiting Rezekne, the working visit will continue in the Balvi region, where Menis will meet with various community groups, including representatives of the municipality, entrepreneurs, youth, and local communities.
During the visit, the minister will also meet with the leadership and deputies of the Balvi municipality to discuss current issues related to energy and infrastructure development in the region.
In the afternoon, the Minister of Climate and Energy will participate in the "Energy of Communities in the Balvi Region" forum, where he will hold discussions on energy communities, local energy production, and opportunities for involving residents in sustainable energy development.
