A military court in China has sentenced former Defense Minister Li Shangfu to death. He was found guilty of corruption, reports China Central Television (CCTV).
"Li Shangfu was found guilty of accepting bribes and giving bribes and sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve," the statement said.
It is noted that Li Shangfu was also sentenced to life deprivation of political rights and confiscation of all personal property. After the two-year reprieve, the sentence will be commuted to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole or mitigation of punishment.
General Li Shangfu was appointed as the head of the country's Ministry of Defense following the parliamentary session in China in March 2023. Prior to this, he held positions as the director of the Xichang Satellite Launch Center, deputy commander of the PLA Strategic Support Force, and from 2017 to 2022, he headed the troop training and supply department of the Central Military Commission of China.
In our opinion, the sentence against Li Shangfu is one of the harshest within the framework of the anti-corruption campaign in China. This sentence demonstrates that even high-ranking officials are not immune from punishment, and the fight against corruption remains one of the key priorities of the authorities.
