Deputies from the Riga City Council factions 'Sovereign Power' and 'United for New Latvia' have proposed to convene an extraordinary council meeting with the aim of relieving Mayor Viesturs Kleinbergs of his duties.
In the justification for the demand, the deputies point to the opaque process of adopting the city budget for the year 2026, during which Viesturs Kleinbergs, as the main reporter, failed to provide the deputies with complete information on a number of municipal budget expenditure items.
Moreover, the deputies reproach the chairman of the Riga City Council for improper crisis management in dealing with the aftermath of the tragedy on Bauskas Street, 15, as well as for a nihilistic attitude towards the victims.
The deputies also consider the actions of Viesturs Kleinbergs related to involving hired workers of the council and council deputies in alcohol consumption to be absolutely unacceptable and inconsistent with the position of mayor.
The deputies have also turned to the Bureau for Prevention and Combating Corruption, the State Labour Inspectorate, and the Ministry of Smart Administration and Regional Development.
"The patience of both Riga residents and opposition deputies has run out! In less than seven months, Viesturs Kleinbergs has proven that he is absolutely unfit for this position. The entire city is shocked by municipal procurement at inflated prices: painting changing rooms for 3000 euros each, purchasing walkways made of 'redwood', renting one printer for 2200 euros a month, and a whole series of other possibly corrupt deals," commented the head of the faction, Julia Stepanenko.
