Summer in Latvia has begun not only calendar-wise but also from a meteorological perspective. According to meteorologists, on June 1, the average daily air temperature reached the necessary mark, and forecasts indicate further warming.
Meteorological summer officially began in Latvia.
According to operational data from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre, on June 1, the average daily air temperature in the country reached +15 degrees.
Forecasts indicate that in the coming days, the temperature will remain above this level, allowing us to consider the summer season to have begun not only by the calendar but also by natural indicators.
In meteorology, summer begins when the average daily air temperature remains at +15 degrees or higher for at least five consecutive days. The first day of this period is considered the start of the season.
Interestingly, June 1 is also the average date for the onset of meteorological summer in Latvia according to climatic observations. This means that this year, nature has almost completely coincided with the long-term norm.
Meteorological seasons do not always align with calendar ones. Sometimes summer arrives significantly earlier or later, depending on the weather conditions of a particular year. For comparison, last year, meteorological summer on average across the country began only on June 13.
However, in some regions of Latgale, it arrived unusually early. For instance, in Daugavpils and Rēzekne, summer indicators were recorded as early as April 17.
This summer may turn out to be warmer than usual. According to the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, the average temperature in June in Latvia is expected to be about two degrees above the climatic norm. Preliminary forecasts also indicate a likelihood of a warmer summer overall.
After a cool and changeable May, the beginning of June has already brought noticeable warming. In the coming days, temperatures in many areas of the country will rise to +20...+25 degrees.
Thus, summer in Latvia has started exactly according to the climatic schedule, and further forecasts provide grounds to expect a warmer season than usual.
