Chinese Scientists Discover Unexpected Benefits of Sweet Coffee

Coffee with sugar may positively affect longevity, according to scientists from Southern Medical University in Guangzhou.

Previously, researchers established that coffee consumption may contribute to longevity, but it was unclear whether this effect persists when sugar is added.

To find out, Chinese scientists analyzed the medical records of more than 171,000 residents of the UK from the UK Biobank.

It turned out that people who drank unsweetened coffee in any amount for seven years had a 16–21% lower risk of death compared to those who avoided coffee.

Interestingly, the risk of premature death for those who consumed one to four cups of coffee with sugar per day was 29–31% lower. On average, participants added one teaspoon of sugar to their drink.

Scientists are still unclear about how sugar in coffee is linked to reduced mortality risks; however, the results may delight fans of “liquid desserts.”

The only advice given by the Chinese researchers is to avoid getting carried away with beverages from coffee shops and chain restaurants, as they may contain much more sugar than the coffee considered in this study. It is better (and much more economical) to make coffee at home.

Previously, cardiologists determined how much coffee one should drink daily to reduce the risk of stroke and death from cardiovascular diseases. Doctors also compiled a list of foods that should not be consumed with coffee.
