The volume of practical support provided by Latvia to Ukraine since the beginning of the war has reached nearly one billion euros, according to the annual report by Foreign Minister Baiba Braže on the work done and planned actions in foreign policy and EU matters in 2026, LETA reports.

The report emphasizes that Latvia's position regarding support for Ukraine remains unchanged: comprehensive assistance to Ukraine must continue, and European countries should take a leading role and increase their contributions to at least 0.25% of their gross domestic product (GDP).

The document also notes that in international organizations and bilateral dialogue with states from various regions of the world, Latvia defends Ukraine's right to self-defense against aggression, calls for comprehensive assistance to Ukraine, and urges to strengthen political, military, economic, and diplomatic pressure on Russia and countries that facilitate its aggression. Latvian officials maintain an active dialogue with Ukraine, and visits to the country are conducted regularly.

The report states that Latvia has actively participated in the work of the "Coalition of Goodwill," working with allies on security guarantees for Ukraine in the post-war period. Additionally, Latvia has joined an international initiative aimed at bringing home the illegally deported Ukrainian children by Russia.

Latvia provides Ukraine with political and diplomatic support, as well as practical assistance, including military, humanitarian, financial, reconstruction, and development support.

According to the long-term support agreement and security commitments signed between Latvia and Ukraine in April 2024, Latvia provides military assistance to Ukraine amounting to 0.25% of GDP, as well as 15 million euros for reconstruction from 2024 to 2026.

The report notes that Latvia's military support for Ukraine in 2025 included purchases of products from the Latvian defense industry, participation in coalitions to support Ukrainian capabilities, including Latvia's leadership of the Drone Coalition, as well as military training for Ukrainian soldiers.

In 2025, Latvia joined NATO's "Ukraine's Priority Needs List" initiative, allocating 7.2 million euros for it, and also participated in NATO's mission to support security and training in Ukraine. Furthermore, Latvia joined NATO's "Renovator" initiative aimed at modernizing the military medicine and rehabilitation system in Ukraine.

Considering that Ukraine spends about 60% of its budget on military needs, Latvia actively participated in negotiations for EU support for Ukraine in 2026–2027, advocating for the allocation of assets from the Central Bank of Russia to stabilize the financial situation in Ukraine and rebuild the country.

In December 2025, EU member states agreed to freeze the assets of the Central Bank of Russia indefinitely, and at the December European Council summit, a decision was made in favor of a loan solution from the EU to ensure funding for Ukraine for the next two years.
