The Latvian National Opera has decided to seek compensation through the courts for losses incurred after the cancellation of the new production of the opera 'Parsifal'. The project was halted several months before the premiere when the creative team led by Katharina Wagner withdrew from it.

The Latvian National Opera and Ballet intends to go to court to recover losses incurred after the cancellation of the new production of the opera 'Parsifal' by composer Richard Wagner.

The decision was made by the theater's board after negotiations with project partners failed to resolve the issue out of court.

The premiere of the performance was scheduled for October 2025 and was considered one of the most notable projects of the season. However, three months before the show, the production was canceled. The reason was the decision of the company representing director Katharina Wagner, as well as other members of the creative team, to withdraw from further work on the project.

By the time of the cancellation, the theater had already invested funds in the preparation of the performance. After the production was disrupted, it attempted to recover the incurred expenses through negotiations, which continued until the end of 2025.

For any major theater, the cancellation of a premiere at such a late stage means not only artistic but also financial losses. By this point, a significant portion of the preparatory work related to sets, organization of the production, and season planning is usually already completed.

As previously reported, the theater received a notice of withdrawal from the project last summer. Representatives of the creative team explained their decision by stating that they would not be able to realize the production within the planned timeframe and according to the original artistic concept. One of the reasons cited was the withdrawal of one of the key members of the creative team from the project.

The amount of losses incurred by the opera has not been officially disclosed. The theater claims that this information remains confidential.

Nevertheless, the very fact of going to court indicates that the parties were unable to find a compromise solution, and the dispute will likely be considered in a legal context.

Now, the question of possible compensation for expenses related to the canceled production of one of Wagner's most famous works will be decided by the court.
