The prosecution must conduct a punishment policy in which the punishment assigned in each criminal case protects society, deters criminals from reoffending, and restores justice, emphasized the President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, who met with Attorney General Armin Meisters on Monday at the Riga Castle.
As reported to the LETA agency by the President's advisor Martinš Dregeris, Rinkēvičs congratulated Meisters on his appointment as Attorney General, particularly noting the role of the prosecution in strengthening legality and public order.
The President emphasized: by responding to violations of the law and ensuring compliance, the prosecution protects the interests of society and the values of a democratic state.
"The prosecution plays an important role in shaping Latvia's punishment policy, which must be effective enough so that the punishment applied in each criminal case - including those related to national security - protects society and deters criminals from reoffending, as well as restores justice," said Rinkēvičs.
The President and the Attorney General discussed current issues regarding the work of the prosecution and the Attorney General's priorities for 2026.
As reported, on November 20, the Saeima appointed the senior prosecutor of the Riga Judicial District, Armin Meisters, as Attorney General.
88 Saeima deputies voted in favor of Meisters' appointment, with no votes against.
The majority of factions represented in the Saeima, as well as the Saeima's legal commission, previously expressed their support for Meisters.
