The new women's prison may open as early as 2028.
The new women's prison in Cēsis may be built by the end of 2028, and the last inmates from the Jelgava prison will be transferred to the Liepāja prison by the end of June, said Dmitrijs Kalins, head of the Prison Administration (PA), at a meeting of the Saeima Defense, Internal Affairs and Corruption Prevention Committee.
The PA is currently working on preparing a contract for the construction of a new prison building in Cēsis, which is planned to be signed in the fall.
"If everything goes well, the procurement will take place by the end of the year. Construction will take place in 2027 and 2028, and the work may be completed by the end of 2028," Kalins said.
With the start of operations at the new Liepāja prison in early May, the transfer of inmates from the Jelgava prison began. Yesterday, there were 80 inmates remaining in this prison who were to be transferred. Ten inmates are to be released by the end of June, with the last inmate being released on June 28. The prison will be closed on July 1.
The Grīva branch of the Daugavgrīva prison is planned to be closed in mid-December.
Currently, the only place of detention for women in Latvia is the Ilūkste prison. Last fall, there were nearly 200 inmates in the Ilūkste prison. The infrastructure of this prison is critically outdated and cannot be used for the full execution of sentences and resocialization.
There is also a juvenile correctional facility in Cēsis.
