For two weeks, Andris Kulbergs immersed himself in the role of Prime Minister — assigning tasks, meeting foreign delegations, and even making his first foreign visit...
But all these pleasant days seem to be over — very difficult problems lie ahead!
Just yesterday, the Prime Minister began discussing the fate of the national airline. The head of government met with the management of airBaltic and discussed the main provisions of the business plan prepared by the airline.
The details of the plan will not be disclosed to the general public, as this is all commercial confidential information. However, the residents of the country are not concerned about some commercial nuances, but rather one question — will taxpayers' money need to be pumped into the airline again?
In response to journalists' questions about whether state investments will be needed in the near future, the chairman of the airline's board, Andrey Martynov, said after the meeting with the Prime Minister that "it is difficult to judge at the moment."
But he reminded that the statement in the airline's annual report that additional funding of 100 to 150 million euros will be required to finance the activities of airBaltic for the winter season of 2026/2027 remains in effect and has not been canceled.
Let us recall that under the previous government, the Saeima approved the provision of an urgent loan of 30 million euros to the airline. This money was not given all at once; it is being disbursed in installments, with the first tranche already returned to the State Treasury by airBaltic.
