Officials Can't Even Buy a Rolls-Royce!” Deputy Criticizes the Income of Senior Officials

Alexander Kiršteins reacted to the attempts of deputies to abolish additional payments and monetary awards for public administration workers.

Opposition deputies of the Saeima introduced several amendments aimed at reducing or completely eliminating additional payments and monetary awards to state and municipal officials, which would save several million euros. However, the ruling party was categorically against such an encroachment on officials' pockets. Independent deputy Alexander Kiršteins reacted to this in his characteristic ironic and mocking tone: "How can you not be ashamed! People in ministries have nothing to eat, they can't even buy milk for their children... textbooks. Right now, I am looking at the rewards for the deputy secretaries of the ministries for the first 8 months of this year. That is, not for the minister or the state secretary, but for the deputy state secretary! So, for 8 months, the total reward for each deputy state secretary of the Ministry of Finance amounted to 79,993 euros! For that kind of money, you can't even buy a Rolls-Royce! In the Ministry of Economics — 68,918, in the Ministry of the Interior — 62,673, in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — 47,000, in the Ministry of Agriculture — 33,000. Now I won’t name them all. I don’t know why the Ministry of Culture is so underfunded with only 10,000... the least. In the Ministry of Justice — 12,000. In the Ministry of Education and Science — 12,000. They are absolute paupers. There’s no need to envy these people, right? Well, let them live well. So I think we should help the poor ministers. Otherwise, what will we do if they leave their jobs due to low incomes? We will be left orphans."
