Contrary to expectations, the very controversial "language provision" was not significantly changed.
Let us remind you that a couple of weeks ago, lengthy discussions in parliament were sparked by amendments submitted for the second reading of the Education Law, which prohibited teachers from using any language other than the state language in their communication with each other and with students. The rapporteur for this bill, Antonina Nenashova ("Progressive"), promised to modify this amendment at the third reading stage. However, no proposals for a fundamental change to the amendment have been received so far. Moreover, the Ministry of Education proposed to supplement the bill with a clause stating that the head of the educational institution is responsible for ensuring compliance with this language provision in the law.
In turn, the Saeima's lawyers proposed to adopt the following wording for the "language provision":
"To improve one's command of the language of speech and the state language, to not raise doubts about the significance of the state language through one's actions, and, unless otherwise provided by regulations, to use the state language in the performance of official duties (including in relation to and communication with learners);".
These and other proposals will be considered by the Saeima's Education Commission next Tuesday, December 2.
On the same day, a joint meeting will be held by the members of the foreign and European affairs commissions. They will hear the report of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Baiba Braže, on the results of the Ministry's activities this year and plans for the future.
The Budget and Finance Commission will discuss budget planning and the transparency of budget expenditures.
No commission meetings are scheduled for Wednesday, as the deputies will begin discussing the budget for 2026 in its final reading. When the discussion will conclude is unknown! It may be only on Friday or even Saturday.
