Scandal Across Estonia: The Flag of Ukraine Was Removed in a County Town

While several former mayors of Viljandi condemned the current city authorities' decision to remove the Ukrainian flags, local nationalist Martin Helme stated that the Viljandi city authorities acted correctly.

"The fact that only the Estonian flag flies everywhere in Estonia should be so fundamental that it should not even provoke disputes. Yes, only the Estonian flag! Not the Estonian flag alongside some other flags," wrote Helme on social media.

"The fact that Viljandi sets a good example is certainly commendable in every way. I urge all municipalities where national forces are in power to do the same! So that the national colors can proudly fly over our people's parliament!" added Helme.

Meanwhile, seven former mayors of Viljandi condemned the current city authorities' decision to remove the flags of Ukraine from the town hall building.

"Such an act sends a completely wrong signal, as if the residents of Viljandi decided to withdraw their support for Ukraine, freedom, and the right of nations to self-determination. Unfortunately, the removal of the Ukrainian flags indicates that support in Viljandi is weakening, and there are disagreements on issues of assistance," the statement said.

Viljandi is a town in central Estonia, about the size of half of the Riga neighborhood of Plavnieki.
