As soon as Latvia welcomed the New Year, a petition for a complete ban on the use of pyrotechnics by the country's residents started on the Manabalss.lv portal.
Arina Kuznetsova is named as a representative of the initiative. She explains that free trade and use of civilian pyrotechnics are still permitted in Latvia, which annually creates serious threats to public safety, health, and the environment. "Pyrotechnics cause severe bodily injuries, fires, hearing impairments, and significantly worsen the quality of life for residents, especially children, the elderly, and individuals with health issues," Kuznetsova emphasizes.
As stated in the initiative, animals suffer particularly — pets panic and flee, sustain injuries, or die, while wild animals experience disruptions in migration and hibernation processes. Furthermore, every year, the media reports on people injured by pyrotechnics explosions, including children, as well as on fires.
According to Kuznetsova, the current regulations do not ensure effective control — pyrotechnics are often used at prohibited times, under the influence of alcohol, and in populated areas, posing a threat to those nearby. The interests of society are subordinated to short-term entertainment, ignoring long-term harm, notes the initiative representative.
She proposes amending the regulations to establish a complete ban on civilian pyrotechnics in Latvia, except for professional pyrotechnics, which can only be used by certified specialists with municipal permission at special events.
The ban would entail prohibiting the trade, storage, and use of pyrotechnics by private individuals, enhanced control and penalties for violations, as well as an information campaign about the reasons for and benefits of the ban.
Thus, in her opinion, society would gain a safer, calmer, and healthier living environment.
Additionally, residents would be able to enjoy holidays without fear, noise, and conflict situations, fostering a more cohesive and responsible society where the lives of people and animals are valued above loud entertainment.
