Adherence to the basic principles of a healthy lifestyle may be associated with a lower risk of death in people facing oncological diseases. This conclusion was reached by researchers from Newcastle University, who published their findings in the scientific journal Cancer.
In the course of the study, researchers analyzed data from 28,550 individuals who were subsequently diagnosed with various types of malignant tumors. Specialists examined the participants' lifestyles and assessed the impact of daily habits on the subsequent outcomes of the disease.
Five key factors were considered in the analysis: maintaining a normal body weight, regular physical activity, balanced nutrition, quitting smoking, and moderate alcohol consumption.
The results showed that adherence to each of these rules was associated with a reduction in the risk of death by approximately 8%. Moreover, participants who followed a greater number of recommendations had an overall mortality rate that was 16% lower compared to those who adhered less to healthy lifestyle principles.
The authors of the study emphasize that healthy habits can play an important role not only in the prevention of oncological diseases but also after a diagnosis has been made.
According to the researchers, physical activity, weight control, and quality nutrition can positively influence the overall state of the body, helping it cope better with the consequences of the disease and treatment.
At the same time, the researchers note that the identified correlation does not prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship. However, the obtained data confirm the importance of a healthy lifestyle as one of the factors that can improve the prognosis for patients with oncological diseases.
The results of the study indicate that even after a cancer diagnosis, a healthy lifestyle can matter for future prognosis. Regular physical activity, balanced nutrition, maintaining a normal weight, and avoiding harmful habits do not replace treatment but can become an important complement to therapy and contribute to improving overall health.
