On Wednesday, winds will sharply strengthen across Latvia, and thunderstorms and hail are expected in the eastern regions of the country. Meteorologists warn that the strongest gusts may break trees.

On Wednesday, Latvia is expected to experience one of the most turbulent weather situations in recent times.

According to meteorologists, northwesterly winds will strengthen across the country, with gusts reaching 15–20 meters per second.

In some areas, the wind may be even stronger—especially during thunderstorms in the eastern part of the country. There, gusts could exceed 20 meters per second.

Meteorologists warn that in certain regions, the wind may break trees and create dangerous conditions on the roads.

Short-term rain is expected in many places, but the most challenging situation is forecasted for the eastern part of Latvia. There, localized thunderstorms and hail are possible.

Despite the approach of summer, the weather will remain quite cold. The maximum air temperature will only reach +11…+15 degrees.

In Riga, the day will likely pass without significant precipitation, but the wind will be particularly noticeable—gusts in the capital may also reach 20 meters per second.

The air temperature in the city will not exceed +13 degrees.

This combination of strong winds and relatively low temperatures may create a feeling of almost autumn-like weather, despite the end of May.

Meteorologists attribute the unstable situation to the collision of two major atmospheric systems: a powerful anticyclone located to the west of Latvia and a cyclone to the east. It is precisely due to the sharp pressure drop over the region that strong winds are formed.

In recent weeks, residents of Latvia have repeatedly faced sharp weather contrasts—from almost summer warmth to cold Arctic air and stormy gusts.

Experts advise avoiding parking cars under trees on Wednesday and being particularly cautious on the roads, near construction sites, and by the water.
