What is Remembered in the Church on May 27, 2026
Isidore was born in Alexandria in the 3rd century and lived on the island of Chios. He was a Christian, chaste, and led a sober life.
When the Roman Emperor Decius came to power, he ordered a census of all his subjects capable of serving in his armies on the very first day. Isidore, who was a strong and tall young man, was taken into the regiment commanded by the military leader Numerius.
The next decree from the emperor required all soldiers to worship pagan idols, and those who did not obey the order were condemned to death. Then the centurion, under whom Isidore served, reported him.
He was captured, sent for interrogation, and there he fearlessly confessed his faith, refusing to worship idols, saying that he obeyed only the will of the eternal God. Then he was tortured, and later his tongue was cut off so that he would stop praising God. At that moment, Numerius lost his power of speech. Then he gestured for Isidore's head to be cut off. His body was secretly buried by his friend, the secret Christian Ammonius, who was later also killed for his faith. Later, the relics of Isidore were transferred to Constantinople and placed in the church of Saint Irene.
