On Tuesday, the animal rights organization Nähtamatud Loomad will hold a large visual demonstration in front of the Riigikogu building in Tallinn, urging the rural life committee to send the bill to ban caged housing of hens for a second reading.
Large banners and numerous posters will be used at the event, and a giant cage with visual materials on the bill will be set up on stage for performances. Currently, more than a hundred people have registered to participate in the action.
The bill to ban the caged housing of hens has passed its first reading and is now "stuck" in the rural life committee. In support of it, the organization Nähtamatud Loomad presented a petition that gathered 34,482 signatures.
Interestingly, Estonia is one of the lagging countries in the European Union in transitioning to cage-free egg production: 77 percent of hens here are still kept in cages. Caged housing of hens is already banned in Denmark, Slovenia, Austria, Germany, Luxembourg, Switzerland, the Belgian region of Wallonia, and the Czech Republic. Discussions on this issue are also ongoing in Norway, Romania, Latvia, Italy, and other countries.
