Criticized by Minister of the Interior Janis Dombrova, the head of the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (OCMA) department for the placement of asylum seekers, Angelika Alika, will no longer lead the asylum seeker placement center "Mucenieki" starting next week, but will continue to work in the office, the LETA agency has learned.

Shortly after taking office, Dombrova expressed dissatisfaction with Alika's work on social media, thus assigning an evaluation of her accountability for "systematic violations."

This week, the Ministry of the Interior informed the LETA agency that the minister had notified the head of the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (OCMA), Maira Roze, about the violations identified at the "Mucenieki" center and discussed the necessary further actions. The minister also expressed his assessment of the organization of work at the center and the performance of responsible officials.

Dombrova believes that the head of the OCMA's department for the placement of asylum seekers is not suitable for the position. As emphasized by the ministry, the decision on further actions and personnel matters is made by the office itself.

In the OCMA, the LETA agency learned that the office received information about possible violations in the organization of work and other violations at the "Mucenieki" center. The office has begun an in-depth investigation to objectively assess all received signals.

Starting from June 29, a new head of the "Mucenieki" center will begin work, who will also perform the duties of the head of the department for the placement of asylum seekers. The name of the new head has not yet been disclosed, while Alika will continue to work in the office in another position.

Dombrova previously stated that there were disturbances at the "Mucenieki" center twice before the holidays, and it was necessary to involve a special unit of the State Police to stop the escalation of mutual conflicts.

Dombrova expects that the leadership of the OCMA will be able to demonstrate sufficient progress in returning illegal immigrants who, by deceiving the institutions, obtained the status of asylum seekers.

Earlier, in an interview with Latvian Radio, Alika stated that the situation at the "Mucenieki" center is complicated only because it is overcrowded; however, according to her, no information about risks to the safety of staff or serious incidents has been received.

Commenting on recent statements by the Minister of the Interior in the media that refugees in the center move freely with knives, Alika explained that they are issued household items, including knives for cooking. The security guard did not confirm that people were taking these knives outside and threatening anyone. There were also no complaints about risks to staff, and there were no attacks on staff.
