After the night flights of foreign drones in Latgale, the National Armed Forces will assess how effective the current air defense model on the eastern border of Latvia is.

The commander of the National Armed Forces, Kaspars Pūce, explained in an interview with LTV that the existing system was primarily designed for linear border protection. Now the National Armed Forces will assess whether this concept is also suitable for situations where the flight trajectory of drones is unknown in advance.

What the editorial board believes makes sense – it is unlikely that enemies will notify the commanders of the National Armed Forces in advance about the attack routes of combat drones.

The exact flight trajectory of the drones was unknown. "We did not have the opportunity to direct units in the right direction. They were patrolling, some took combat positions, but there were no drones in their fire sector — they flew in another direction," Pūce complained.

Nevertheless, Pūce admitted that the approach to defense may be reconsidered. However, he warned that the new solution would not be perfect either. The National Armed Forces cannot completely replace technical means in a short time, but they continue to strengthen their capabilities, including supplementing combat groups with interceptor drones. They are expected to be acquired by the end of May, while training for military personnel continues.

Pūce also reported that initial signs indicated that the drone that fell in Rēzekne was equipped with explosives. The quantity is yet to be assessed.

At the same time, it remains unclear whether the second drone, still being sought, was a combat drone or a decoy. Pūce noted that even a decoy could theoretically contain a small amount of ammunition.

As reported by bb.lv, according to some reports, six drones invaded Latvia. Moreover, one flew to Russia, where it was shot down.
