Viewer of the Bez Tabu program, Liana, shared that her grandmother Ruta became a client of the social care nursing home 'Liepa' in Riga at the beginning of last year. During this new stage of life, relatives regularly visited the elderly woman.
At first, Ruta was able to go on walks with family members, but over time, her condition, according to relatives, only worsened, reports TV3. However, the last visit was, to put it mildly, shocking — relatives were informed that the grandmother had been taken to the hospital.
It then became clear that she had been in the medical facility for four days. No one had informed the relatives about this fact. Upon arriving at the hospital, Liana received even more distressing news.
The nursing home resident was admitted to the hospital on April 2, and her death was confirmed on the night of April 3. Relatives only learned about what had happened on April 7 — on their own initiative. It was only after this that a call came from the nursing home stating that Ruta had been hospitalized. However, by that time, the family already knew about the tragedy.
Alongside organizing the funeral, the family contacted the nursing home to ask why no one had informed them about the hospitalization for several days, thus depriving them of even the theoretical opportunity to say goodbye and be with their relative in her final hours. The response they received surprised them.
Quote from the staff member's explanation:
“There was a lot of work before the holidays. I planned to call the granddaughter and prepared her card with the phone numbers of relatives, but due to human error, I forgot to inform the relatives about Ruta's hospitalization. This was not done intentionally. It was a very difficult day. I sincerely apologize for what happened.”
The Bez Tabu team went to the nursing home for an unscheduled inspection.
The center's director, Larisa Efimova, suggested that everything could have happened at night. The second option is that they could not get through. Because usually, medical staff always call relatives.
When asked what to do now, she noted that the center could apologize for what happened this time.
“They could have called sooner. It’s one call. It takes a few seconds. So that we could be there. But they didn’t do it,” said the grieving Liana, who had already buried her grandmother.
