A fine of up to 1400 euros threatens for placing ads on poles in Riga

Some time ago, the issue of questionable "art" on lamp posts, transformer boxes, etc. was raised on the pages of your newspaper. It was about stickers, advertisements, caricatures, or just strange images.

All this creates a terrible sight, but for some reason, no one reacts to it. Why don’t the city services pay attention to this eyesore?! Reader bb.lv

The police are overwhelmed

The police consider each case individually, as placing stickers can be classified as unauthorized advertising or intentional property damage.

For example, if a person places stickers indicating an event at a specific location and time without approval, the Riga City Council Police, based on the Mandatory Rules RD No. RD-23-201-sn "On the Procedure for Placing Advertisements, Advertising Objects, and Other Informational Materials and Using Posters and Stands in Riga," has the right to initiate an administrative case.

For such violations, individuals may receive a warning or a fine ranging from 20 to 350 euros, while legal entities may receive a warning or a fine ranging from 100 to 1400 euros. Such cases can be reported to the Riga City Council Police via the mobile application or by submitting a statement.

Given the large number of inquiries, the police cannot inspect the mentioned infrastructure objects, but if residents contact us with a statement or report such stickers in the mobile application, we can respond to the information received - go to the specific address and assess whether there are visible violations.

On the other hand, if the property owner (of a traffic light, pole, distribution box, or another object) contacts the State Police with a statement about intentional property damage, the State Police, after assessing the circumstances, has the right to initiate a criminal case in accordance with Article 185, Part 1 of the Criminal Law.
