More than 50 people have signed for the consolidation of the concept of family in the Satversme

Since November 26 of last year, just over 50 signatures have been collected for the consolidation of the concept of family in the Satversme, writes LETA.

The Central Election Commission (CEC) registered a bill in November for collecting signatures, submitted by the society "Latvijas vīru biedrība", which proposes to include the definition of "traditional family" in Article 110 of the Satversme.

For the bill to be submitted to the Saeima, it must be signed by at least 10% of voters, which in Latvia amounts to approximately 150,000 people.

The proposed amendments stipulate the consolidation of the norm that the state protects and supports marriage — a union between a man and a woman — and a family based on marriage, blood relations, or adoption, as well as that the state protects the rights of the child, including the right to grow up in a family founded on a mother — a woman and a father — a man.

Voters can sign for the initiation of amendments to the Satversme until November 25, 2026.

Citizens of Latvia aged 18 and over have the right to participate in the signature collection. Voters can sign for the initiatives registered by the CEC electronically on the "Latvija.lv" portal or by certifying their signature with a sworn notary, at the place of residence declaration in the municipality, at the orphan court performing notarial actions, or in the region with the head of the parish or city administration.

It is also possible to sign for the initiatives abroad — at Latvia's representations with consular officials authorized to perform notarial functions.

This is already the fifth time in recent years that the society "Latvijas vīru biedrība" has submitted a bill to the CEC with the aim of including the definition of "traditional family" in Article 110 of the Satversme. The last signature collection ended on September 27, 2025, with a total of 1,097 signatures collected.
