Money is not given to everyone: how to calculate – are you entitled to heating assistance from the government of Latvia

On Thursday, the Saeima adopted amendments to the law to help some residents of Latvia pay high heating bills. How to calculate the allowance?

The allowance is calculated as follows:

    1. To the utility expenses (heating, gas, electricity, etc.) you need to add 187 euros multiplied by a coefficient (which varies for pensioners, disabled individuals, families with children).
    1. The resulting amount must be compared with the monthly income of the family (salaries, pensions, etc.).
    1. If the income (2) is greater than the expenses (1), then you are not entitled to any assistance. If the opposite is true – welcome to the queue for government assistance (don’t forget the pile of correctly filled out documents regarding utility bills and income).

How much is this in money? For example, if the income of a single pensioner is 500 euros and the housing payment is 300 euros per month, the previous allowance would have been 192 euros, but after the changes, he could qualify for an allowance of 267 euros.

It is easy to calculate that if the income of this hypothetical pensioner is 767 euros, then government assistance from the Silina government will be as elusive as his own ears.

However, for different families, the situation may vary depending on the presence of children, disabled individuals, pensioners, and low-income households. So it is worth trying.

According to preliminary estimates, 30,000 to 40,000 people in Riga will be able to count on government assistance, or every 20th resident of Riga.

But it is not certain that all of them will receive this assistance. For households that are already receiving housing assistance, the recalculation will occur automatically, while others must personally contact the social service, which will make a decision on granting the allowance. Or denying it.

It should be noted that queues are expected in Riga – local authorities plan to close 17 out of 20 social assistance service offices. Some will surely give up on the allowance to save time and nerves needed to overcome bureaucratic hurdles. Especially if it turns out that the government assistance will amount to only a few euros.
