Last year, the State Police finished with an increase in the number of employees, but they are still lacking, Chief of the State Police Armands Ruks told reporters on Thursday.
Last year, 375 police officers were hired, while 302 resigned. A similar situation with staff increases was observed in 2024.
At the end of last year, there were 6,012 positions in the State Police and 4,656 officials. This means that the police are still short of personnel, but, as Ruks emphasized, this is also observed in other institutions. There is a constant competition to offer the best bonuses. According to Ruks, efforts must be made to bring back to Latvia those citizens who have left the country.
At the end of last year, there were 1,199 contractors in the police with a total number of positions being 1,316.
Last year, 100 law enforcement officers left the service voluntarily. In 2025, there was a jump in salary increases, and now the average salary in the State Police is 1,849 euros after taxes, noted Ruks, adding that salaries have also improved for police college cadets.
50.1% of police officers are women, which is the highest percentage among police forces in the EU.
Last year, 103 police officers were held accountable for disciplinary actions, while the year before it was 100. Last year, a case of bribery was also recorded.
