A Cold Record Broken in Rucava in the Second Decade of the Month

On Monday morning, the thermometer in Rucava dropped to -27.5 degrees, breaking not only the record of February 16 but also the cold record for the second decade of the month at this observation station, writes LETA.

According to the data from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LEGMC), the previous record for the minimum air temperature in the second decade of February in Rucava was -27.3 degrees recorded on February 11, 1985.

The cold record for the third decade of the month in Rucava is -28.2 degrees, recorded on February 21, 1940, while the absolute record for February at this weather station is -33.7 degrees on February 1, 1956.

The record for February 16 was also broken in Liepaja, where the air temperature dropped to -24.2 degrees, and the lowest temperature in the country on Monday morning was recorded at the Daugavpils observation station — -30.5 degrees.

The cold record for this date in Daugavpils, as well as for the country as a whole, is -33.8 degrees and was set in 1979.

This month, Latvia has already broken 17 cold records — the highest number of minimum temperature records broken in a single month since May 2023. In the previous two years, only 16 minimum temperature records were broken in total, while the number of broken heat records reached 723.

Also, on Tuesday night and in the morning, the air temperature in some places in Latvia is expected to drop to -25 to -30 degrees, with the strongest frost anticipated in the eastern part of the country, meteorologists predict.
