The Virus Could Not Withstand the Latvian Frost: Patients Started to Recover

The epidemiological situation in Latvia improved last week, according to data from the National Microbiology Laboratory.

Monitoring data shows that clinically influenza has been diagnosed in 216 patients, or an average of 311.1 cases per 100,000 residents, which is 31.8% less than the week before (455.8 per 100,000 residents).

The highest intensity of influenza last week was recorded in Jelgava (1,205.6 per 100,000 residents) and Liepaja (580.0 per 100,000 residents).

A week earlier, the top most affected areas in Latvia were led by the Jekabpils region (930.7 cases per 100,000 residents), Jelgava (814.6 per 100,000 residents), and Jurmala (716.5 per 100,000 residents). According to the data, residents of Jurmala have started to recover, while those in Jelgava have become ill more frequently.

Requests for help related to acute respiratory infections decreased by 23.1%, reaching 1,446.0 cases per 100,000 residents. For pneumonia, 97.9 cases per 100,000 residents were registered, which is 26.2% less than the week before.

In inpatient medical facilities, 274 patients with severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) were hospitalized in the 6th week. Of those hospitalized, 17 were placed in intensive care units. Half of the hospitalized SARI patients are over 65 years old.

Over the past week, five reports of fatalities among patients with confirmed influenza infection were received. All deceased were over 70 years old and had multiple chronic comorbidities.

Since the beginning of the season, 14 reports of deaths among patients with influenza have been received.

The proportion of positive tests for Covid-19 in the 6th week increased to 5.8% (from 4.0% the week before). A total of 64 patients with Covid-19 were hospitalized, with 105 patients with confirmed infection being treated in hospitals, of which 62 had Covid-19 as the primary diagnosis. Over the past week, nine fatalities among patients with confirmed Covid-19 infection were registered.
