The share of Latvian cinema in Latvia exceeded 24% for the first time last year, and four Latvian films made it into the top ten most popular films. This is evidenced by the aggregated data from the National Film Center on box office performance in Latvian cinemas last year.
In 2025, a total of 2.162 million tickets were sold in Latvian cinemas, which is nearly 70,000 more than in 2024. The increase in attendance was recorded despite the average ticket price rising to €6.73.
Last year, the repertoire of Latvian cinemas included 421 films, including 77 local films. They were watched by more than 523,000 viewers, giving national cinema a market share of 24.22%.
For the second consecutive year, the most popular film in Latvian cinemas was the animated feature by Gints Zilbalodis, "Straume" ("Flow"). In 2025, it was viewed by 204,039 viewers, and the total number of viewers since its premiere exceeded 377,000, making it the most-watched film since Latvia regained independence.
Alongside "Flow," three other Latvian films made it into the top ten most popular films:
-
The historical feature film by Dzintars Dreiberga, "In the Net. The Birth of the TTT Legend,"
-
The film by Oskars Rupenheits, "Dark Blue Gospel,"
-
The comedy by Marta Elīna Martinsone, "Parent Meeting."
The successes of Latvian cinema are also noticeable beyond the country's borders: in Estonian cinemas, "Flow" ranked third in the list of the most visited films last year.
At the same time, statistics show that American films still dominate the Latvian box office, accounting for over 61% of the market share, although this figure has decreased compared to the previous year. Among the Hollywood leaders are films like "Minecraft," "Zootopia 2," and "F1" with Brad Pitt, which was watched by nearly 70,000 viewers.
In 2025, there were 33 screening venues in Latvia with 81 screens.
