Last year, train passengers were issued a quarter more fines

Last year, train passengers were issued more than 1400 fines for traveling without a valid ticket — this is 24% more than in 2024, reports the LETA agency citing the joint-stock company Pasažieru vilciens (operating under the brand Vivi).

The company explains that in recent months, since the controllers began working on the trains, there has been an increase in the number of fines issued. This is attributed to regular inspections, more effective control, and the fact that ticket checks are carried out by Vivi employees themselves, which ensures a unified approach and consistency.

At the same time, the company notes that passenger awareness of the ticket purchasing process is growing — more tickets are being purchased in advance, while the number of fines issued remains relatively stable from month to month.

As previously reported, since July 15 of last year, a new system of fines for traveling without a valid ticket and other violations of transportation rules has come into effect on trains.

The new system provides for a reduced fine for passengers who pay it immediately on the spot to the controller, and an increased fine if payment is made later.

If a passenger travels on a train without a valid ticket or does not purchase one at all, the fine is 25 euros when paid on the spot to the controller. If the fine is issued as an invoice and paid later, the amount is 50 euros.

Pasažieru vilciens was established in 2001 as a result of the separation of internal passenger transport from the structure of Latvijas dzelzceļš. Initially, the company was a subsidiary of Latvijas dzelzceļš, but in October 2008 it was transformed into a state enterprise.
