One of the men detained last year and now accused of espionage in favor of Russia is a construction manager, and his job responsibilities facilitated the acquisition of information about the construction of new military facilities, the LETA agency has found.
The charges brought against the 39-year-old man indicate that he illegally collected and transmitted information to the Russian military intelligence (GRU) about the locations of military facilities in Latvia, infrastructure objects, their characteristics, security provisions, NATO troop composition, training, individual armament, locations of exercises, and other information on ideological grounds at the behest of the GRU.
To communicate with the GRU, the accused used an account in the 'Telegram' application.
The prosecution will provide more detailed information after the completion of the pre-trial criminal process.
It was previously reported that this is one of the espionage cases that the State Security Service (SSS) handed over to the prosecution in December last year. The accused was detained by the SSS on August 27 of last year, and the criminal proceedings against him began on August 21.
As a preventive measure, the accused has been placed in custody.
At the end of December, the SSS transferred materials of another criminal case to the prosecution regarding another citizen of Latvia in connection with the illegal collection of information about the Latvian defense sector at the behest of the GRU. No charges have yet been filed.
