Barricades Forever!

Former deputy of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Latvia, the first Minister of Defense Talavs Jundzis recalled events from 35 years ago in a conversation with the publicist Neatkarīgā Elita Veidemane.

"I also had the honor of being the initiator and executor of this idea. Odisejs Kostanda, who worked in the Supreme Council's commission on defense and internal affairs, spoke about the activity of the Soviet Army, as back in 1990 we were thinking about how to withdraw the Soviet Army from Latvia and the Baltic states. The Lithuanians had a very active Minister of Defense – Butkevičius, who said: if any actions by the Soviet army begin, we need to build barricades. This was in August 1990. And one of my former teachers, a historian, believed that he was the author of the idea of barricades. With these examples, I want to say that not just one person thought about the necessity of barricades. At that time, I noticed in the press that the word "barricades" was not mentioned anywhere. And in the December statement of the Latvian National Front, there was not a word about barricades. On January 12, a meeting of the Latvian National Front's council took place in the Great Hall of the University of Latvia. They talked about how many people should guard strategic objects. But I did not hear the word "barricades."

As for today's security situation in Latvia, according to T. Jundzis: "There is much to discuss. I would like our foreign ministry to be more active. The idea of a drone coalition was good, but it was intercepted by the UK and other countries. Now our activity has increased. I would like Latvia to appear more at international forums – Lithuania and Estonia are much more active. We are in the UN Security Council, and after the launch of the Russian 'Nutcracker,' Latvia will raise the issue on this topic. Why in the future? It should have been initiated immediately! For small states, this is the only means – to speak and encourage. Right now, I am giving lectures on international law to students. And what should I tell them if it has ceased from all sides? Once we could talk about Russia, now there are events with Greenland. For large states, international law is like an ant to an elephant; it only hinders movement. The ants scream, but the elephant does not hear it."
