About 3000 people signed a petition for the resumption of LR4 broadcasting

About 3000 signatures have been collected on the public initiative portal "manabalss.lv" for the resumption of the radio program "Latvian Radio 4 - Dome Square" (LR4), reports LETA.

The initiative, intended for submission to the Saeima and the Council of Public Electronic Media (SEPLP), was created on December 20 of last year by Svitlana Brytushchenko.

In her opinion, the decision to revoke the broadcasting license will severely limit access to public media for thousands of residents of Latvia — especially the elderly, residents of rural areas, individuals without stable internet access, as well as representatives of national minorities.

Brytushchenko believes that the cessation of linear broadcasting of LR4 in the FM band reduces the accessibility of public media, the diversity of opinions in the information space of Latvia, and also weakens social cohesion.

"This is also a loss for the media and cultural heritage of Latvia," the initiative emphasizes.

She also points out that such a decision does not align with the goal set by the Law on Public Electronic Media and their Management — to ensure the reflection of the diversity of society and equal access to information for all residents of Latvia.

The initiative calls for the restoration of linear FM broadcasting of LR4 even after 2025, while simultaneously continuing and developing the digital accessibility of the channel.

It was previously reported that as of January 1, the broadcasting license for LR4 was revoked.

The last day of LR4's broadcast was December 31.

It was also reported that SEPLP approved the strategic priorities developed by the board of Latvian Public Media (LSM) for 2026–2029, among which are structural changes for LR4 in the Russian language and the cessation of the existing linear broadcasting format by the end of 2025.

In early April 2024, the process of merging Latvian Radio and Latvian Television was initiated, resulting in both state capital companies merging to form LSM, which began operations on January 1, 2025.
