As of 8:00 AM on Sunday, the State Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) received 193 calls to address the consequences of the strong wind, reported SFRS representative Viktoria Gribuste to the LETA agency.
The majority of calls are related to fallen trees - most often they fell onto the roadway, and in some cases - onto power lines. In certain places, the wind tore off structures and roof coverings.
In the Riga region, there were 80 calls regarding damage caused by the wind, in Riga - 48, in Kurzeme - 36, in Zemgale - 17, in Vidzeme - 11, in Latgale - one.
On Aspazija Boulevard in Riga, Plosta Street in Ventspils, and at the intersection of Ceriņu and Ievas Streets in Jūrmala, the strong wind tore off part of the roof coverings of buildings, while in Viesīte, in the Jēkabpils region, firefighters removed a fallen tree from the roof of a building.
In Marupe, the wind knocked down the bus stop canopy onto the roadway, and on Atmodas Boulevard in Liepāja and Friedrich Zander Street in Riga, fallen trees leaned against the walls of residential buildings. On Gregora Street in Jūrmala, at the intersection of Čiekurkalna and Škerliņa Streets, and on Lapstu and Auduma Streets in Riga, trees fell onto passenger cars.
In most cases, the consequences of the wind were addressed by the State Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS), and in 40 cases, information about the incidents was passed on to volunteer firefighters, reported Gribuste.
On Sunday morning, rescuers continue to receive calls from the public to address the aftermath of the strong wind.
Last night, gusty winds blew across Latvia, with the strongest gusts recorded in coastal areas - in the port of Liepāja, wind speeds reached 28.4 m/s, in Ventspils - 27.6 m/s, and in Daugavgrīva - 25.9 m/s.
In the first half of the day on Sunday, a northern, northwestern wind will continue with gusts of 15-19 m/s, reaching up to 25 m/s on the coast. Throughout the day, the wind is expected to gradually subside, meteorologists predict.
