Buy seedlings! Rīgas meži urges not to cut down Christmas trees in the forests

The municipal enterprise Rīgas meži urges residents to refrain from cutting down Christmas trees in the forests of Riga and Pieriga.

The chairwoman of the board of "Rīgas meži", Anita Skudra, noted that it is important to pause and feel the magic of the forest ahead of the holidays: "We are privileged that nature is so close to Riga - it gives us beautiful landscapes, aromas, and a sense of tranquility," she emphasized, explaining the company's position against cutting down Christmas trees.

The territories managed by "Rīgas meži" exceed 62,000 hectares and are located within a radius of 40–50 kilometers from the capital. These lands are characterized mainly by sandy soils, which are most suitable for pines. Spruces, which require more fertile soils, are found here significantly less often - they make up only about 10% of all trees. Most of them are grown in a specialized nursery and planted during the restoration of forest areas.

The preservation of spruce plantations is particularly relevant today due to the widespread infestation of the eight-toothed bark beetle, which has destroyed significant areas of spruces in Pieriga and other regions of Latvia. The restoration and care of spruce forests are becoming increasingly important to ensure their resilience to both pests and climate change.

The company encourages celebrating Christmas next to a living growing Christmas tree, planting it in the yard, on a homestead, or in the neighborhood. Seedlings can be purchased at specialized retail outlets.
