Pies with Bacon, Cielaviņa and Salad Rasols!

A survey conducted by Maxima Latvija* showed that national holidays inspire residents to predominantly choose products from local producers. Yes, we are patriots!

This year, the table in November will be dominated by products from Latvian farmers and producers: this is noted by 45% of respondents. An integral part of the celebration this year will be potatoes, cabbage, pies with bacon, and of course, cakes. At the same time, Maxima Latvija customers intend to create a special atmosphere at home using various thematic attributes and decorative items, the demand for which increased tenfold in the first week of November.

"Last year, during the week of national holidays, the favorites among our store customers were products that are ingredients of traditional Latvian dishes, such as mayonnaise, which topped the list among representatives of all generations, as well as cabbage, long cucumbers, and various dairy products. Therefore, this year, to ensure that the national holidays are felt in every home, we have taken care of special and advantageous offers on the most popular products from local producers, as well as various festive attributes, so that everyone can create a festive mood at home," said Maxima Latvija's communication manager Liene Dupate-Ugule.

Choosing the Fruits of Our Land

Although about one-fifth of the residents of Latvia admit that more modern flavors, such as Asian or Mediterranean cuisine, sometimes appear on the festive table, the majority (49%) still consistently adhere to classic recipes of Latvian cuisine. The most popular dishes for the festive table are: potatoes (52%), stewed cabbage (49%), pies with bacon (49%), cakes (45%), and salad Rasols - our version of Olivier (40%).

Last year, during the same days, the most frequently purchased items included ingredients for Rasols: boiled sausage, cucumbers, mayonnaise, and potatoes. The leader among festive cakes was Cielaviņa Staburadze, while the most popular vegetable on the festive table was cabbage. A similar trend is observed this year – in the first week of November, customers' baskets most often contained potatoes, dairy products, eggs, and long cucumbers.

What About the Money?

Analyzing the survey data, it can be concluded that the festive budget this year for most Latvians is moderate and well-thought-out.

Most respondents (37%) plan to spend 31–50 euros on the festive table, 30% – up to 30 euros, and 20% – 51–70 euros.

Almost all (95%) respondents plan to purchase products in grocery supermarkets; about 17% will choose to shop at markets, and 5% – in online stores.
