In schools and kindergartens in Latvia, fewer illnesses are reported this autumn than usual

In schools and kindergartens in Latvia, there has not yet been a widespread occurrence of acute respiratory diseases this autumn, according to data from the Disease Prevention and Control Center (DPCC), LETA reports.

In the month since monitoring resumed, attendance at educational institutions has fluctuated between 90% and 94.6%. Attendance in preschool institutions was slightly lower, ranging from 63.6% to 74.2%.

Last week, an average of 94.6% of students attended general educational institutions, which is 4.6 percentage points higher than the week before the autumn break. The largest increase was recorded in Riga schools, with a rise of 10.6 percentage points, reaching an attendance of 94.8%.

The highest attendance was noted in the Valmiera region at 101%, while the lowest was in Rezekne at 91.8%.

Last week, 74.2% of children attended preschool institutions, which is 10.6 percentage points higher than the previous week. The highest attendance was recorded in Liepaja and Rezekne at 78.9%, while the lowest was in Jelgava at 61.9%.

As in the general education system, attendance in kindergartens also increased last week. The largest growth was registered in the Jekabpils region, with an increase of 30.6 percentage points, reaching an attendance of 70.4%.

A total of 62 general educational and preschool institutions in Daugavpils, Gulbene region, Jelgava, Jekabpils region, Jurmala, Liepaja, Rezekne, Riga, Valmiera region, and Ventspils are included in the monitoring.

Educational institutions report attendance weekly as of Thursday.

As previously reported, last week the incidence of influenza and other acute respiratory infections remained low, the Disease Prevention and Control Center (DPCC) informed the LETA agency.

Influenza was clinically diagnosed in four patients, resulting in an average incidence of 5.9 cases per 100,000 residents, the same as the week before.
