Due to the lack of the minimum number of students established by the state, the Edole Primary School and the Zigfrids Anna Meierovics Primary School in Kabile are planned to be closed from August 1 of next year, as decided by the deputies of the Kuldiga District Council on Thursday.
This academic year, there are 44 students enrolled at the Edole School, while there are no students in the 1st and 3rd grades. The Kabile School has 40 students — there are also none in the 1st grade, and only one child is in the 8th grade, according to data collected by the local government.
According to the current requirements of the Latvian government, educational institutions in the Kuldiga region located in rural areas must have at least 30 students in grades 1–3, 4–6, and 7–9.
The Saeima has instructed the Edole and Kabile schools to inform the head of the Kuldiga Education Department about compliance with the established state quantitative indicators by May 31, 2026.
If the schools do not find students by May 31, 2026, the respective educational institution will be closed as of August 1, 2026. The deputies also instructed the school directors to inform staff, students, and their parents about the decision made.
