On the night of Sunday, Riga's night public transport will perform its last trips, LETA reports.
As previously reported, the Riga City Council has resumed night public transport services on weekends and holidays during the warm season. The Commercial Passenger Transport Licensing Commission has extended the license for night public transport until the end of October.
As part of a pilot project, the Riga City Council is assessing whether there is demand for such a service. After the project concludes, the issue of introducing night transport on a permanent basis will be considered, as well as a decision on the timing of its resumption next year.
From May 17 to September 7, 2024, a total of 8,181 passengers used the night transport.
According to SIA "Rīgas satiksme", the number of passengers who used the night transport exceeded expectations. As a result, the company's losses were lower than planned, allowing the project to continue with the already allocated funding.
Buses from the center of Riga to the neighborhoods depart five times a night — at midnight, 1:00 AM, 2:00 AM, 3:00 AM, and 4:00 AM.
Night transport operates on three routes. Bus No. 1 runs on the route "Center — Teika — Jugla — Mežciems", bus No. 4 — on the route "Center — Agenskalns — Zolitūde — Imanta", and bus No. 6 — on the route "Center — Purvciems — Plavnieki — Dārziņi".
As previously reported, the turnover of "Rīgas satiksme" last year, including state and municipal subsidies, amounted to 193.315 million euros, which is 5% more than in 2023; however, the company's profit significantly decreased to 93,608 euros.
"Rīgas satiksme" owns shares in the companies SIA "Rīgas karte" (51%) and SIA "Rīgas acs" (100%). In March 2024, the Riga City Council allowed "Rīgas satiksme" to cease its participation in the capital of "Rīgas acs", initiating the liquidation process of the subsidiary; however, "Rīgas acs" has not yet been liquidated.
"Rīgas satiksme" provides passenger transport by buses, trams, and trolleybuses in Riga, as well as manages parking on the streets of the city. The sole owner of the enterprise is the Riga City Council.
