Riga Mayor Demands Ban on Two-Wheeled Ride Mobility Vehicles That Are Causing Child Fatalities

Riga Mayor Viesturs Kleinbergs has appealed to the Consumer Rights Protection Center (CRPC) to consider a ban on "Ride Mobility" vehicles.

Kleinbergs stated at a press conference that if these vehicles were classified as mopeds, children would not be able to use them, and their users would need to have a driver's license.

If the company "Ride Mobility" had not so aggressively insisted that its vehicles are self-propelled bicycles rather than mopeds, yesterday's tragedy would not have occurred, the mayor is convinced.

Kleinbergs urged entrepreneurs, if they want to protect children's lives, to remove these bicycles from the streets.

The mayor also instructed the Department of Environment and Mobility to inspect all pedestrian crossings over the railway and find solutions to enhance safety, such as installing barriers to prevent easy crossing over the tracks.

Yesterday in Imanta, two girls were hit and killed by a train while crossing a railway crossing on a Ride Mobility electric bicycle.
