Остров Сирос

Living for free on this paradise island in Greece? It's real, but only under one condition, which we detail.

Living carefree on a fairy-tale Greek island and simply giving yourself a break is now possible on Syros, but with one condition: you must love cats.

The animal welfare organization "Syroscats (source in German)" is looking for volunteers over 25 years old. "We welcome volunteers—singles or couples—who are in good physical shape, mature, healthy, and independent," the organization states.

In return, candidates are required to do one thing: love cats and dedicate about five hours a day to the animals five days a week for at least a month.

In exchange, the animal welfare organization, according to the description, provides accommodation, breakfast, and covers associated expenses.

"If you have relevant education or experience as a veterinary assistant, or if you are used to dealing with feral cats, we will be especially happy. But we welcome all cat lovers, provided you are ready to not be afraid of hard work, are reliable, independent, and can arrive on time," the organization notes.

Dream Island

The heart of the island is the town of Ermoupoli, which looks not like a traditional fishing village, but rather like an elegant 19th-century port city. Spacious squares, luxurious mansions, marble staircases, and an impressive town hall remind us that Syros was once one of the most important trading centers in Greece.

Syros is one of the most interesting islands in the Cyclades. It is considered largely untouched by mass tourism. It is not a typical party resort like Mykonos. For those seeking authenticity and tranquility, the cafes and restaurants frequented by locals—where prices often remain quite reasonable—are sure to please.
