Technologist: dishwashing sponges should be replaced every two to four weeks.

Food technologist Montse Melendez urged to take good care of dishwashing sponges. Her words were reported by El Confidencial.

According to Melendez, the hidden danger of sponges lies in the fact that they come into contact with food residues, grease, and moisture daily, which allows various pathogens to multiply quickly on them. To avoid this, it is necessary to disinfect them once a week, the specialist emphasized.

Rinsing and wringing them out is not enough, she clarified. Effective disinfection methods mentioned by the technologist include heating the damp sponge in the microwave for one minute, boiling it for five minutes, and using a disinfectant solution. The sponge should be replaced with a new one every two to four weeks, depending on the frequency of use and the material, Melendez added.

This period should be shortened if the sponge has stubborn stains or if it has developed an unpleasant odor, the expert claims. The sponge should be stored in a dry and well-ventilated place, she concluded.
