The Cannes Film Festival has once again found itself at the center of discussions about gender equality. The reason is the results of the selection for the main competition: of the 22 films included in the program, only five are directed by women. In the face of criticism, the festival organizers had to explain their position and respond to claims from feminist organizations.

Festival director Thierry Frémaux emphasized during the traditional press conference that the main criterion for forming the competition program remains the quality of the film, not the gender of its creator. According to him, the organizers do not intentionally exclude women and do not consider introducing gender quotas, as this could affect the artistic independence of the selection process.

Frémaux also recalled the position of French director Agnès Varda. He stated that shortly before her death, she asked not to highlight films simply because they were made by women, but to evaluate works solely based on their artistic merits. This position is what the head of the Cannes Festival considers defining for the competition selection.

Nevertheless, feminist organizations, including the "50/50 Collective," continue to criticize Cannes for the insufficient representation of women in one of the most prestigious film programs in the world. Activists believe that the festival cannot reflect the modern film industry while gender imbalance remains so pronounced.

Such disputes surrounding the Cannes Film Festival have been ongoing for several years. Despite the organizers' statements about striving for equality and openness, the issue of female directors' participation in the main competition remains one of the most discussed topics at the film forum.

In the editorial's opinion, the discussion surrounding the Cannes Festival shows how sharply the global film industry continues to perceive the issue of equality and representation. The debate between proponents of artistic selection without quotas and those demanding more noticeable participation of female directors is likely to remain a part of major international film festivals for a long time.
