Sandro Botticelli's painting "Madonna and Child on the Throne," which UK authorities had previously temporarily banned from being exported, will remain in the country. The artwork was purchased by The Klesch Collection, owned by collectors Gary and Anita Klesch.
The painting, created in the 1470s, has been made available to the public by its new owners. The masterpiece has been loaned for three years to the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. The museum's director, Xa Sturgis, thanked the collectors for their decision to provide the work to the state museum and emphasized the importance of such initiatives for cultural institutions.
According to The Art Newspaper, the painting was valued at approximately £10.2 million last May — about $13.9 million. Previously, the artwork was sold at Sotheby's auction in London for £9.7 million.
