A new system of higher education in the arts is gradually forming in the country — with its own doctors.
Over five years, 25 professional doctoral degrees have been awarded in the joint program "Art" of the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, the Latvian Academy of Arts, and the Latvian Academy of Culture.
The majority of graduates are from the Academy of Arts (16 people), with another seven from the Academy of Music and two from the Academy of Culture. Currently, there are 53 doctoral students in the program, including foreign students.
The program covers various fields — from music and visual arts to film, theater, and contemporary dance. The professional doctoral degree is the highest level of education in Europe, and such an opportunity in Latvia only emerged in 2021.
The five-year anniversary of the program will be celebrated on May 6 with a conference and concert titled "The Charm of Light," where results will be summarized and further development discussed.
