On April 24, at the "Lielais dzintars" concert hall, the Liepaja Symphony Orchestra will perform a program dedicated to the 80th anniversary of composer Peteris Vasks.
Peteris Vasks, who recently received the Grand Prix in music for his contribution to musical art, is one of the most outstanding European composers of academic music of the late 20th century, whose musical language is understood worldwide.
At the anniversary concert, in addition to the symphonic work "Lauda," the fantasy for violin and strings "Vox amoris" will be performed by violinist Liga Baltabola. The orchestra will be conducted by artistic director Guntis Kuzma, whose solo on clarinet will be featured in the piece "Moments musicaux."
At the concert, a woodwind quintet - flutist Egija Sproge, oboist Martins Zalite, clarinetist Karlis Catlaks, bassoonist Artis Zens, and horn player Edgars Rugelis - will perform Vasks's "Music for Departed Birds."
"In the music of Peteris Vasks, fundamental themes are addressed: the struggle of light and darkness, the reflection of nature in sound art, echoes of birdsong that fascinated the composer, moments of catharsis, the fate of our people and all humanity, leaving their mark in the past, chaos in the present, and hope for the future," said the concert organizers.
