The Museum of Decorative Applied Arts of Latvia has still not received a specific response from the owner regarding the future of the rare vase by artist Jūlijs Madernieks, accidentally found in an American thrift store, reports LETA.
The story of the rare vase by Latvian artist Jūlijs Madernieks, purchased in the U.S. for just three dollars, remains unresolved.
As reported by the curator of the ceramics collection at the Museum of Decorative Applied Arts, Dace Lāviņa, the museum has been in contact with the new owner of the item, but has not received a specific answer regarding the future of the vase.
This concerns a work from the workshop "Burtnieks," which operated in Riga from 1929 to 1939. The vase was accidentally discovered by American Lawrence Ray in a thrift store in Columbus.
Despite a small damage — a crack at the bottom — the find has generated significant interest in Latvia.
Especially after it became known that the vase has a museum "twin" from the legacy of writer Anna Brigadere.
That is why the Latvian National Museum of Art decided not to acquire the item: a similar vase is already held in the collection of the Latvian National Museum of Literature and Music.
Nevertheless, interest in the vase found in the U.S. has not faded.
Earlier this year, when the story was actively discussed in society, the vase was temporarily exhibited in the museum's library along with a photograph of Brigadere.
According to Lāviņa, the current owner is willing to provide the vase for exhibitions and research, but the question of its permanent location remains open.
In fact, the story shows how unexpected finds of Latvian cultural heritage continue to surface beyond the country's borders — sometimes literally in second-hand stores and flea markets.
At the same time, museums acknowledge that they cannot always compete with private collectors or foreign buyers.
Lāviņa emphasized that the museum is open to collaboration with owners of valuable art objects and is interested in their public display and research.
For now, it remains unknown whether the vase found in the U.S. will return to Latvia for a long time or disappear from the museum community's sight again.
