From December 9, a large portion of eID cards will no longer be able to use electronic signatures, the Public Relations Department of the Ministry of Smart Governance and Regional Development (VARAM) reported.

The changes will affect eID cards issued between September 2, 2019, and January 30, 2026, which use a specific technological component to ensure the operation of electronic signatures.

According to the Latvian State Radio and Television Center (LVRTC), after December 9, the changes may impact more than 346,000 eID cards with the microchip version "Cosmo 8.1".

The changes are related to the certification process conducted by the national supervisory authority of France. "We are currently working on legal and technical solutions so that users of the affected eID cards can continue to sign documents in Latvia," said Gatis Ozols, Deputy State Secretary of VARAM for Digital Transformation.

The ministry reassures that the eID card will still be valid for identity verification and for travel within the European Union.

Residents and organizations that use or plan to use electronic signatures specifically through the eID card are advised by VARAM to check whether their card is among those affected by the changes. This concerns cards with the microchip version "Cosmo 8.1". The check can be performed on the website "reg.eparaksts.lv/eidinfo".

Since the situation does not affect the use of "eParaksts mobile", VARAM encourages downloading the application and using it for electronic signatures or switching to other solutions.
