Jackdaws, members of the corvid family, are known for their high intelligence and ability to remember, especially in the context of revenge.
British biologists previously confirmed that these birds are capable of recognizing humans, associating them with positive and negative actions. Additionally, jackdaws can identify thieving tendencies among their rival peers.
Recent studies have shown that jackdaws possess the ability to “vote” for making collective decisions. The entire flock would leave the nesting site only when their calls reached maximum volume. This study was published in the journal Current Biology.
Ornithologists analyzed audio and video recordings from jackdaw nesting sites and found that the flock would leave the location only at the maximum volume of their calls. Moreover, if the volume of the jackdaw's cawing was increased using a recording, the birds would also immediately leave the perch.
In the future, ornithologists plan to study how light and noise pollution affect the “democratic” behavior of these birds.
