Which animal is considered the smartest in the world?

Humanity undoubtedly ranks first in intelligence, but when it comes to animals, which of them can claim the title of the smartest?

The definition of the smartest animal depends on how you understand the term "intelligence." The list of the "smartest" includes not only monkeys but also octopuses and goats.

Measuring animal intelligence can be challenging, as there are many criteria, including the ability to learn, solve puzzles, use tools, and self-awareness. Therefore, assessing the intelligence of all animals is quite difficult. At this point, it is impossible to determine an absolute intellectual leader among animals, and we will explain why.

Consider the octopus. At first glance, this animal may not seem very smart, but research shows that some species of cephalopods possess a high level of curiosity and problem-solving ability. In one experiment, an octopus was able to unscrew the lid of a container to reach a treat. In another case, it learned to recognize people, responding positively to a friendly person and ignoring those who did not show affection. Recognizing people is a sign of intelligence that is also observed in pigeons.

Chimpanzees, as our closest genetic relatives, rank high on the intelligence scale. In a 2007 study, scientists conducted a cognitive test for adult chimpanzees, adolescents, and college students. Participants had to remember the location of nine numbers on a touchscreen monitor for less than a second and then reproduce them. Adult chimpanzees and students showed similar results, but adolescent chimpanzees remembered the positions of the numbers with greater accuracy.

Goats, like octopuses, have demonstrated problem-solving skills, especially when food was offered as a reward. In one test, goats had to use their teeth to pull a rope down and activate a lever, which then needed to be lifted with their mouths. Ultimately, 9 out of 12 goats were able to understand the mechanism after four attempts, and most of them remembered how to do it even after 10 months.

Other animals known for their intelligence include pigs, which can navigate mazes and learn symbolic language. Rats can make decisions based on their experiences, and bottlenose dolphins possess a level of self-awareness comparable to that of elephants.

Thus, the definition of the "smartest" animal depends on your criteria. Perhaps a more important question is whether other animals evaluate our intelligence, and if so, how do they perceive us?
