Researchers Warn About Harmful Plant for Dog Health

A group of American researchers found that the consumption of hops can lead to a dangerous condition in dogs known as malignant hyperthermia (a sudden increase in body temperature). This was reported by the Mexican veterinary portal Diario Veterinario, citing an article in the journal Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care.

Researchers collected and analyzed data on 177 cases of dog poisoning by hops, recorded at the American Animal Poison Control Center from 2005 to 2018.

The study results showed that 74% of dogs exhibited symptoms such as tachypnea (rapid shallow breathing), hyperthermia (increased body temperature), and vomiting within 8 hours of ingesting hops. In 4 animals, malignant hyperthermia developed, leading to their death. It was also reported that due to the timely actions of the owners, some pets were able to survive without veterinary intervention.

Based on the data obtained, the researchers concluded that hops pose a serious threat to dog health. They also noted that with the growing popularity of home brewing, the number of cases of pets consuming hops has increased. Scientists plan to conduct further research to determine the exact mechanism of hops' effects on a dog's body and to develop appropriate treatment protocols.

If a dog has ingested hops or shows clinical symptoms of hyperthermia, it is recommended to cool the animal quickly and seek veterinary assistance immediately.
